Junior Section

Planned events: Over the coming months we intend to organise a few events:

Winter/Spring Term

Shine Awards  evenings: On the last Monday of each month we will organise a “Shine Awards” evening. This is based on the Shine Awards programme sponsored by Norwich Union. Performances in a range of events will be recorded and at the end of the term there should be awards for everyone who has completed sufficient events to a minimum level.

Cross Country races at Livingston: The third and final East League cross country race will be at Deans, Livingston on Saturday 6 Feb. There are races for everyone:

U11 at 1:00, U13 at 1:15, U15 at 1:35, Ladies at 1:55, Men at 2.30. Our Pentland Runners have been very active in the adult races and we’re expecting another good turnout. They would like to cheer on the youngsters while they’re waiting for their races! Details are at http://www.eastleague.freeserve.co.uk/

Summer Term:

Mini-Championship Evenings: Last summer we organised three “Mini-Championship” evenings, with medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each age group. We hope to do the same again this summer using a similar format:

Evening one: 800m and Shot Putt;

Evening two: 100m and Long Jump

Evening three:      Water of Leith Mini-Marathon

Forth Valley League: On three Thursdays evenings in April, May & June and on one Saturday in August we participate in a local inter-club competition with a mixture of track races and field events (jumps and throws)

Dates for these will be announced nearer the time. When information on other events becomes available we will pass out notes at training.

Everyone who started coming along from December 2005 who is not in the  membership list should complete a membership form to join the club

There is a section on the membership form for parents to indicate whether they are able to help out at training. Our policy on Child Welfare (included with this Herald) encourages parents to be actively involved to help ensure a safe environment for everyone.

Our Coaches

Shelagh Jackson (UKA Level 2): Shelagh joined Harmeny as an U11 and had a successful career as a junior, especially in long & high Jump. She was the first Harmeny Female to long jump over 5m, and as a junior won the Scottish Schools High Jump and Long jump titles. She then progressed to Edinburgh Woollen Mill (now Edinburgh Southern Harriers) and competed in their British League Team. Shelagh has returned to coach Harmeny juniors after completing a degree in Sports Science. Works in Youth Development with Edinburgh Leisure

Dave Law (UKA Level 3): Dave has been a stalwart of Corstorphine Athletic Club for several years on the coaching side and competitively, and he is a top quality distance runner (in his age group). Dave was the winner of the first Dean Park PTA 10k held in Balerno several years ago. Dave came to our assistance last year when we had insufficient coaches from the ranks of parents.

Bob Douglas (UKA Level 2, jogScotland jog-leader): Bob looks after the group of adults & juniors who go to Saughton on Thursdays (sprint and endurance), and organises the adult running section of the club (Harmeny Pentland Runners). Bob is a still an active sprinter and was recently runner-up in the Veteran’s 90m handicap event held as part of the New Year Sprint meeting (the fourth year in a row he has been placed in the top 3). Currently works in IT Strategy with The Royal Bank of Scotland

Jenny Robertson (UKA Level 2): Like Shelagh, Jenny joined Harmeny as a youngster and had a successful career as a junior sprinter before heading off to college. Jenny still holds the club female record for the 100m (12.52s) and 200m (25.88). Works as a therapeutic radiographer at the Western General

David Gibson (UKA Level 1): David as an active duathlete (cycling and running) as well as a middle distance runner. David looks after some of the older juniors doing slightly more intensive training work in the gym or endurance running. Works in IT with Standard Life.

Bill Daughty: (Sprints): Bill first coaching several years ago when his children got involved with athletics, and has recently returned to coaching since grand-daughter has started with us.

…. All helped out by a squad of parents and student helpers.

Hemeny in the News

Some parents may have spotted that some reports of the New Year Sprint meeting mentioned two Harmeny athletes, Tommy Ashby and Stacey Downey, were heat winners in the main New Year Sprint event. Tommy and Stacey competed for us as juniors for several years.

Did You Know

There is now a very active adult section (Harmeny Pentland Runners) which meets on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. So if any of our juniors believe their parents should be getting a bit more active, point them this way (www.pentlandrunners.org.uk).
