Feb / Mar Update

Runners council – notes from the meeting on 14 Feb are on the website for full details.  We are planning various social events over the next few months and will set up another rota for Wednesday evenings so you all know what to expect.

Club Fleeces and jackets

We have black fleeces or black thicker jackets.   The last time we bought them the fleeces were about £17 and the other jackets £35.  Each jacket is marked with our own logo. The thicker jackets seem a bit thick to run in but are ideal to wear to events.  If there is enough interest I will check up on prices and let you know sizes etc.  I do not keep these jackets in store and buy as erquired.

Speak to Norma if you are interested

JogScotland groups

We are hoping to start a new beginner group once the clocks change in March so if anyone knows any beginners ( ie those who  cannot jog for 10 minutes)  please let them know or ask them  to get in touch with us.  Also if anyone is interested in becoming a Jogleader course dates are on the jogscotland website (www.jogscotland.org.uk)– next one is in Glasgow on 17 April.  The more members we have who can lead groups the easier it is to cover all the different ability groups.  It would be a help to have some help for Tom and Paul to lead the faster groups.  Course fee is paid by Harmeny  if you then lead groups on 10 occasions.

Advice required from any IT wizards

Is anyone a website expert?  We want to investigate setting up a password protected area on the Pentland runners website to see if this could be used in same way that facebook is.  It may be that the  group facility in Facebook is the best option but some members are not so keen on setting up their own page in order to join in the chat in the group.  Bob updates the website regularly but we need some help to see if it’s possible to add to this using the current webhosting service we use.  Let us know if anyone can help – thanks!

Reports – only one from Norma in Valencia!  If you’ve done a race/run that’s different or if you won!  then please write a bit for the next newsletter it’s good to hear about races that  other pentland runners might like to enter in the future ( or ones to be avoided)…

A spilling of thoughts... from Norma

Valencia marathon is a flat course on a figure of eightish shape. Passing lots of local sites. Incidentally why don't the photo teams set up to capture shots of you running past these sites. Much more point to buying a photo!
Only about 3,500 runners but plenty of support for most of the course. Loads of cheering via megaphones and microphones - though I had no idea what they were saying! Saddest thing was all three course toilets were kept locked for the whole race...
Goody bag - 2 t-shirts. One of them in technical material. Bottle of olive oil, a small one, but still useful. Loads of info about the free pasta party, free bus tours etc. Which I read when we had got back to where I was staying - too late to go back! Ticket for Metro on the race day. And a bum bag, shoe bag and the usual amount of paper...
Weather was just right - about 7-11 degrees, and a bit of drizzle. The temperature should have been 14-15, which was the initial attraction. Apparently it was impossible to cross the city but everyone seemed very supportive and patient.   They had to be – as I walked round the roundabouts!

I managed to run well to about 30k till the knee gave out. First half in 2.08. As good a time as I could hope for! Knee became too sore to keep going. Don't think it is a damaged ligament but an MRI in April should confirm this. Tried some mixed run/walks and decided that walking fast was more achievable. So from a usual 9.45/10 minute mile running pace I managed 12/13 minute miles walking! As a result I completed the race in 4:49:49! 10 minutes quicker than Paris and last year’s Edinburgh, when I ran the lot!
So although I completed the race, I don't feel I completed the marathon...

And for the doubters, yes, I managed a whole marathon with no one to talk to!
I aim to have another go at the race and I would definitely recommend it, but Valencia is not the easiest place to fly to from Edinburgh!

And for any dog owners a note from Norma about a run to do with your dog – ( we think?)

Details at http://www.cani-cross.co.uk/more_info/glentress_canix.shtml Entries close 5th April.  No entries on the day.
