I would like to offer your members a
10% discount on a new running service
I am launching called YourRunCoach. It is a tool that generates personalised training plans, based on race and training information
provided by the athlete, for distances of 3k to
coach, many of your members may still benefit from this service, especially since club
coaches are so thinly spread these days. Although there are other similar services out
there, I believe that the level of personalisation, the session details and value for
money YourRunCoach offers are unrivalled.
The website URL is www.YourRunCoach.co.uk and I
have set up a special 10%
discount Payment Page for your members. Once the runner has filled in
their Plan Personalisation, they will be redirected to the Payment Page.
Here, they should login using the following information:

Reports from races -
Paul Thomson reports on the Ben Rinnes race
a 14 mile Hill race with 5 peaks, over 5100 feet of climb/descent and this time round in
temperatures of over 20 degrees! Having recently taken up this hill running lark (only my
third race) I seem to have developed a strange masochistic tendency and keep going back
after swearing never to do another one. It's like cross country, you hate it but for
some reason you keep going back.
Can't see how you can call it a race either as it is a bit of a misnomer considering
you need ropes and crampons to get up some of the slopes. I
have literally nearly stood on someone's hand as they tried to pass me on hands
and knees, there isn't a single horizontal element in any of it! Don't even ask how they
get down, I think they close their eyes and pray - I'm way too much the wuss and
"mince" it ;-). Anyway, the race. You start off in Dufftown (a mere 4 hour drive
up - thanks Kirsty!!!) with a lap round the
Just when you think your calves can't take another step, your quads are burnt out and you
have a burning desire to sit down and demand a helicopter rescue, you get to the top and
the cool breeze is an absolute joy - as is the view. There's then a nice undulating boggy
surface to stagger over just before you get to the down bit. Forget trying to
use the sheep trail as it's too narrow so it's off into the heather, with the unknown
ankle breaking holes and bumps, and you bravely launch yourself downwards. I say
bravely but others obviously have different concept of what constitutes being brave
and laugh at my pitiful attempt as all the people I've struggled to pass on the
way up come flying past me on the way down. At this point I really did try to
"mince" faster and nearly caught a few up before we hit the coll and started
going up again.
This second hill is more fun as it has step functions built into it - for the non
mathematicians, it's a flattish bit with a vertical bit and then a flattish bit. Might
have called it a stair case except the spacings were irregular and the steps
weren't exactly the easiest to mount as they tended to be knee high with boggy bits
above and below. Another long hall and everything is screaming again by the time you
struggle to the top. Once more, if you can keep the sweat out of your eyes, the views are
astonishing. Your heart rate starts to drop and you begin to breathe again, wondering
what the downhill is going to be like this time. At first it seems just like the last hill
and then you get to about 400m from the bottom when the world goes vertical and throws in
a lose shale path just to make sure you don't get too blase. I think I might have actually
walked that bit, though there were some who literally flew past me, before coming
on the third hill.
Now I say hill, I think it dwarfed all the hills in the Pentlands. Imagine Castlelaw
times 2 and as steep. The plus point was the nice wide path to the top. The fun part was
the mixture of cemented rocks (man made water channels), lose rubble and shale and
assorted impedimentia trying to trip you up. I actually ran most of this hill in the
end but nearly lost it when the race leader came barreling down when I was only a third of
the way up. No mincing here, this was gravity assisted sprinting. Incredible to watch.
Anyway at the top, having thought I'd pressed my early lead to my advantage, I found
Staggering to the bottom I suddenly remembered the next bit of the hill coming up and
wished I hadn't. I started out well enough, managed 5m of fast walk and decided that I was
completely and utterly knackered. From that point on it was just me and the hills. I
didn't care who was in front or behind, I don't remember the tops, I just made my body go
forward. The whole world narrowed to where my feet were going so it came as a complete
surprise when someone called out my name. The specialist had caught me up (from the garmin
afterwards it was about a mile and a half from the finish). Fionna is also damn good at
running downhill and easily passed me. Old habits kicked in then and I actually tried to
go faster but didn't have her lack of respect for life and limb. On the last section
(flattish) she wasn't too far in front and I seriously thought about chasing her down
(who's competitive?) but then realised I didn't have the heart (or strength) to and simply
focused on the idea of just getting over the line.
The heat was almost unbearable so I staggered over the line and into the shade
and collapsed into a heap. Guess who was up an about looking like she was ready to give it
another go? All I can say thrrrpt!
Best thing about hill running? A cold beer and chips with curry sauce (don't
think it will wash out of my T-shirt). Get out there and give it a go!
Norma
(and Pauline) reports on two ultras

The Devil 6th August
My first proper Ultra. At the beginning
of the year Pauline had suggested that as we both reach birthday decades
this year we should run an ultra!
Martin and I spent the night in the
Green Welly car park and had to be on the go by 5am to register with 8 other Harmenites. Thankfully the weather was looking just right,
even at that hour. An early panic set in

We collected Purdey and went to find
what leg 3 and the Devils Staircase had in store for us.
Here the heat kicked in! What
had been nicely cool in the valley became almost unbearable up there. We progressed onwards to hear a shriek from
runners in red tops coming to meet us Keziah and Janis had run from Kinnlochleven
to meet us. So welcome and uplifting.
Lunch in Kinnlochleven, retirement
for Purdey and a welcome break for us. Swallow
food, dress blisters and make good use of the wonderful facilities Martin provided
a flushable toilet.
Leg 4, the longest leg and another
hill to climb - and no more checkpoints but an unofficial stop at Lundavra. Keziah ran with us to Lundavra then swapped with
Janis. But things got tight as the place was
very difficult to find. Keziah nearly had to
run her first 20 miler!
The last leg was across the Lairigmor. Not as bleak as Rannoch Moor and some pretty
amazing hills on either side. This leg was
support by the Wilderness Rescue Support with lots of sweets, drinks and chat. A welcome interlude. Janis was with us and Keziah had driven on to

runners 4 from Harmeny met at the start and despite a threat of rain we had
a nice day. Slightly cool but otherwise fine.
This
route was much more gentle than the Devil. Still
a couple of hills to contend with but no Devils Staircase! Again some super views, especially from the
top of Ben Aigen. A lot of forestry tracks
and some road but plenty of variety including the sea breeze for the last couple of miles. Purdey joined me for 20 miles but after the
checkpoint she tried to turn round a few times and when I stopped for nature she just lay
down... nuff said!
Her
company for the last 5½ miles may have helped me as I had had enough by then and really
toiled to get to the end. But hey ho, managed
it in less than 8 hours 7:59:19. And
my support team... well they were still sitting in the tea room at Spey Bay.
A
great ceilidh in the evening even if they ran out of stovies before I could get to the
trough and another nice medal to add to my collection to say nothing of the bottle of The
Glenlivet and beautiful pottery whisky goblet for coming 1st in my age group. One of the advantages of running at my age is that
I seem to have more chance of winning...
If
you fancy a toe in the Ultra field this is a good one to have a go at. But what for me next?
Having
added my race total I seem to have run 224.8 miles this year so far. Think Im going to have a lie down.

This was my fifth and unfortunately last ultra of the year, and my first full year of
ultras. My sixth so far since lining up to the start of the same race a year earlier. I've
learned a lot in the last year - mostly what not to do - but I always believe that the
best lessons learned in life are those learned the hard way - so I'm happy to make
mistakes. I've learned not to go off too fast at the start, even if it does feel
ridiculously slow, because if you do, you'll slow so much at the end that everyone you
left at the start will go zooming past you! I've learned how important it is to eat during
an ultra (and to try and eat more in the earlier miles even when you don't feel like it
because after 30+ odd miles, you won't feel like eating anything), what foods work best
for me (jam rolls, hula hoops, raspberry jelly and peanut m&ms) and what foods don't
(gels, bleurgh).
I've learned that it's ok to walk up hills, its even ok to walk down them if you have to,
as long as you keep putting one foot in front of the other and plug on. I've learned about
how important a good support crew is - Gavin at the Devil, my dad at the

and Fionna on the Ben Rinnes SHR Championship Race - 30 July
A (bit too) hot and sunny day greeted a good Harmeny turnout in Morayshire to compete
in the Ben Rinnes 5 tops hill race. Fionna, Paul, Gary, Kirsty and Keziah made the trip
north for this challenging race that makes up one of the "long" SHR championship
races. The race is part of the Dufftown Highland Games and boasts total climbs that exceed
It's been great having more Harmeny runners at the hill races this year - we should have
at least 3 qualifiers by year end for the championship - next year it would be
fantastic if we could get at least one male and female team finishing (I'll continue to
pester people...!). There's just one championship race left for this season (Ben Venue -
see other article in this newsletter), but I'll put up the 2012 race dates for next year
as soon as they come out. Anyone needing any more information, please see me

Coll Half
Ian and Mo
Last year we spent a few days of a
holiday on Coll. While there we noticed that
there was a half marathon a couple of weeks later but all accommodation had been
booked up months before so, probably after a few glasses of wine and a good dinner, we
vowed to return to do the race. So having
booked our accommodation late last year we arrived in mid-August to do it. Not only is there a half marathon but there are
also a 10k, a 5k, a 1k kiddies run and a half marathon walk.
The course is simple just follow the
road and keep the sea on your left hand side. The
tarmac road does run out after about 6 miles where it changes to a track through the sand
dunes for about a mile before returning to the tarmac surface again. From the sea Coll appears to be low-lying and flat
but that is just an illusion - there is not one section of the race that is run on
level ground. It can be, and was, extremely
windy and for the first five miles and last three it was against runners.
There were plenty of water stations
and with a prize for the best dressed water station it was no surprise to be
offered water from the Chimps Tea Party, James Bond, or witches amongst others. We have to admit that after 7 miles the whisky
offered at the water station had little attraction for either of us. There were welcome and really good refreshments at
the end.
Times were slow those who had
also ran the heaven and hell half marathon claimed Coll to be harder. Similarly the 10k, which uses the second half of
the half marathon is not a race to get a pb on.
This was, however, a brilliant race
with excellent organisation, everyone on Coll must have been involved is some way with the
races days events.
In the evening there was a Ceilidh,
the band from Tiree were brilliant, though playing everything somewhat faster then normal,
such that by the time we left it felt as though we had done another half marathon.
Apparently the band was still playing at 1:30 but by that time we were well and truly
tucked up in bed.
We enjoyed the event so much that we
have already booked accommodation for next year, (but I, (Ian) might be entering the 1k
race!).

so I missed G by either 48 hrs or 3/100s or both.

A note from our handicapper (Ian
May)
I
am pleased as the handicapper - to see that it was virtually a blanket finish. As the race is a bit longer than a standard 10k I
have used my judgement(!) to revise handicaps. The
guidelines I have used are as follows: Times between 0 and 2 minutes over a handicap
no change.
Times over 2 minutes I have
added approximately half the time over 2 minutes to the handicap eg a time 5:30 over the
handicap would result in ½ of 3:30 that is 1:45 added to the handicap.
Times under handicap I have taken
approximately half the time under off the handicap.
Any queries corrections or comments
please let me know.

Last
SHR Championship race of the Season - Ben Venue, October 1
The last championship race of the year takes place on Saturday October 1 at Ben Venue
(12km, 900m climb). This is a medium category race, so anyone still hoping to complete the
series (by doing 1 short, 1 medium, 1 long and 1 other) will have to do this last one to
qualify. The SHR Annual do and prize giving (and picking up of hard earned SHR mugs!) will
also take place that day at the Forth Inn, Aberfoyle. Could be an opportunity for a wee
Harmeny outing and shindig?
See the Scottish Hill Running website for further details (www.shr.uk.com)
*Note* As this is a medium category race, the usual requirements will probably be in place
(i.e. full body cover, map, compass etc).
