November Update

If you like running in the snow – enjoy – otherwise take care and hopefully conditions will improve soon!

Reminder that membership fees are now due, please complete a membership form and give to Norma along with the fees by end of December please.

Annual Membership fees for 20010/11: £22

Membership Form: An updated membership form (Word Document) for the new membership year 10/11 can now be downloaded from the club website

Other annual reminder: Scottish Athletics operate a separate registration Scheme. Participants in Scottish Athletics “Permit” events (eg road races etc) pay a £2 levy if they have not taken out "Athletics Scotland" registration.  When a road race entry form ask a question about "AS affiliation number" or "Registration number" etc this is what they are referring to (Harmeny does not issue membership numbers). Membership of Athletics Scotland is required far anyone competing in regional or national championships. Members who do wish to register should do so directly with Scottish Athletics.

For any new members, there’s lots of information on the club website (www.harmenyac.org.uk) and we also have a Facebook group, http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=46768682967

It’s a closed group purely for club members to discuss races, share lifts  to races, post photos etc etc.  Contact us to become a member of the group. If you do not want to set up your own facebook page we have a dummy login and password so that everyone can access Harmeny facebook pages with complete security and anonymously (contact Norma/Frank/Anne D for details)

London marathon places
We’ve received an allocation of three places again this year, and as only 3 members had received ballot rejections the 3 places are going to Frank Tooley, Amanda Pennycott and Fiona Donaldson.  Good luck to all.

Next Coffee & Cake run… 23 Jan?
We’ve not run for our Coffee & Cake this year and with everything frozen we probably won’t…. so we’ll pencil in Sunday 23 Jan, and hope the slow thaw will have done its stuff by then.  For anyone who’s not done one before, these are slo-o-o-w-w-w-w paced runs on easy flattish routes that are under 10k. And as the name suggests we run to somewhere where we can recover with coffee & cake.

JOGSCOTLAND Beginners programme
New Jogscotland beginners group will start in January, weather permitting! If you know anyone who wants to start/or return to jogging and wants to join a group starting with very gentle walk/jog sessions then please  ask them to contact us, it will probably be on Sunday mornings – but Wednesday evenings/Monday mornings might be also possible.

Club website, Facebook and Forums

At the runners council meeting we talked about continuing with facebook or trying to set up a forum via the club website. Norma has tried Yahoo groups, that got a majority thumbs down for difficulty of logging in and all the advertising on the site and Google seems to be too inflexible.  We have set up a ‘dummy’ login email and password to allow people without their own facebook page to simply login and join in discussions see photos etc – so we’ll see how this goes.  But if anyone can help with setting up a forum or has a friend/relative/etc that might be willing to help then please get in touch.

Also as in last newsletter if anyone would like to help Bob maintain and update the Harmeny website, please contact us.  If these tasks are spread between enough members then it won’t take up too much of anyone’s spare time which we all want to use for running (& coaching)! If you want pictures published on the website, send email them to us, but please reduce to under 100k before sending.

 Socials
Those who went to Lancers reported an excellent evening enjoyed by everyone there.  We are planning our annual ceilidh for middle of January (Sat 15th is probable date) – more details to follow.

Boxing day run – is on a Sunday so 10am as usual but wear your santa hats!

Handicappers ramblings… (Ian May)
This has been a busy period with 4 handicap events – the results of which appear in this newsletter.  I have taken the best Park Run time for anyone who ran more than once during September and the first two weeks of October for the Park Run Handicap.  For both this and the two Jedburgh events I have used the handicap times based on the Water of Leith Handicap.  I have then used your “best” time for the new Handicaps, which will be posted on the web.   I have used the new handicaps for the Broxburn Cross country.  For the men I have used your 10k handicap and for the women I have used 60% of your 10k time. I have not modified handicap times following the Cross Country.

We will present the trophies on Wednesday evening as soon as the weather picks up!

I still have trophies from 2009 for: Jane Mole, Margi Leitch and David Gibson.

And for this year trophies for:  Ann Cordier, Fiona Donaldson, Nicky Freedman, Rhoda Ross, and Alan Flemming.

I will bring these with me to club runs if you would like to collect them, or if someone can collect and pass on.

Because no one entered the Scottish Gas 5k this year I have two trophies left and I propose we use them for the January Eastern League Cross Country.

Finally now is the time to think about next years handicaps events – what would you like to be included?

Reports from recent races

 Double at Jedburgh
It was a bit of a special day at Jedburgh with a unique winning double. Jon Carpenter won the half marathon and Boab Turner won the 10k. We look forward to their next head-to-head!

Iain Morrice reports from 2010 Glen Clova Half Marathon
You can always tell when winter is here. No its not the snow on the Pentlands or the frosty mornings in Balerno or the fact you need to turn the heating on.
Its Clova time and that means winter.
Good turnout of Pentland Runners for the 2010 Clova half, there were 15 names in the entry list but on the day only 9.5 runners. The .5 refers to Kieran who ran in his home club colours of Carnegie.
I have done this race since 2002 and I think this years conditions were the best ever. No wind( ok a wee bit), no frost or ice and clear skies with only a few puddles on the roads.
Many of you who have done this race before will recall some of the conditions you have encountered and let me tell you this years was defo the best ever.
The tops were snow covered and looked FAB U LOUS.
This to me is still one of the best and hardest halfs on the road racing calendar although nothing compared to the Heaven and Hell which is in a different league. For those who have not done this race before, the route is over undulating tarmac around the Glen clova area which is 1 of the 5 fabby Glens in Angus. Its a race that you must do sometime in your running time as it is very special.
The race was full early on and a reserve list was made up, this shows how popular it is now.
Our runners were Iain Morrice,Gary Connelly,Alan Grierson,Lucy Marshall,Kirsty Stoddart,Alan Price,Mo may,Ian May, Kieran Morgan(.5) and Gavin Orr who ran it as a blind guide for his friend Ken.
The special mention for the race goes to MO MAY who got 1st Prize for being the 1st lady over the line in the xx age category, she did it in an amazing time of 1 hour 56 mins.
As usual the after race stovies and the huge log fire were welcomed after a hard race around the Glen.

Wendy Beardmore and Caroline see their first brockenspectre!
Late October Caroline Dunn and I were running in the hills. As we staggered towards the first peak - East Kip - we were in such dense mist that we could not see more than a few feet in front.  Wondering if we were lost  the hill top suddenly emerged, lit up by an intense sun. Feeling more motivated to continue, we reached the ridge before the final climb.  Here, we found ourselves standing on a perfect blanket of cloud with only 'our' peak and a couple of others in the far distance visible. Then we spotted it!.....

............As we turned with the sun behind us to admire the view there was a distinct large circle opposite in the far distance, sitting in the mist.  The only thing which separated the circle from the mist, making it visible, was a perfect, rainbow edged circumference.   It gets better!  Inside this circle our silhouettes were perfectly reflected, even showing our pony tails and noses. We stood and waved our arms like "angels" and then made a star shape with arms/legs as we sidestepped along the ridge with the circle/silhouette following us.   If we separated we each had our own circle and silhouette,  which we were able to overlap/merge by moving back together.

Unfortunately neither of us had a camera to capture this awe inspiring site. We both agreed that if we had been alone we may have questioned our sanity or wondered if we had encountered spirituality!  After discussing with another member of our running club, we learnt that this phenomenon is called a "Brockenspectre".  From this we were able to search the web for a scientific explanation and found that others all over the world have experienced a similar spectacle. Have spoken to loads of other Harmeny folk and have yet to meet anyone else who has witnessed such a spectacle.  Have any of you?  Wendy Beardmore

PS – We saw a brockenspectre several years ago when we were skiing at Nevisrange and managed to get a photo tho not a very clear one – and here’s   the science about it - http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/reports/wxfacts/Brocken-Spectre.htm

Race Dates

The final meeting in the East District Cross Country League will be at Deans, Livingston on Sat 15 Jan (weather permitting!) – info at http://www.eastleague.co.uk/index.htm  These races are open to any club members. Our combined club score is the best for years and it would be good to get a large turnout across all the age groups to keep up the momentum.
