Administration

Running tops and running vests: We’ve put in further orders for short-sleeved running tops and running vests (about £700 - worth), so we’ll be looking to sell as many as possible. The “Pentland Runners” short-sleeved tops remain at £18, and the running vests (no lettering) are £12 (£10 for children’s running vests).

Paper copies of Harmeny Herald: The content of this email plus the exploits of our juniors go into a paper edition of our “Harmeny Herald” newsletter. I’m assuming that everyone who gets this email doesn’t also require a paper copy of the Harmeny Herald, as it saves a fair amount of photocopying and postage (35 copies). Those with children in the club will still get a paper copy, but if anyone else would like a paper copy, let me know.

Accommodation in London: King’s College, London is offering members of UK Athletics Clubs discounted rates on overnight accommodation in student residences between 29 June and 13 Sep. Typical rates are £20-25 single, £41 double (some inc breakfast). Contact me for details.

 KNOWN PERFORMANCES

Edinburgh Hare & Hounds 10 miles, Sunday 27th Feb
(By our Roving Reporter – Iain)

"4 of us hardy souls ran the Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds 10 mile road race on a very wintry Sunday 27th Feb, Iain Morrice, Richard Gray, Tom White and Caroline Dunn. This was the first time for many years that the 10 mile race had been organised alongside the 5 mile road race and it looks like with 76 runners it may well be an annual event.
There was excellent weather on the day, no snow in Edinburgh and bright sunshine with a temperature of 5 degrees with a chilly wind from the East. I had checked with the organisers on Saturday to see if the race was still on, they wondered why I was checking!! ( Balerno still had about 3/4 ins of snow!!).
The 5 mile race started at one part of the route and the 10 mile started at another point on the course. It was strange running against/with people that were doing the 5 mile race because the majority doing the 10 mile were club runners and the people doing the 5 mile race were joggers!!, as you can imagine we were passing the 5 mile runners at a fair turn of speed.
The route was excellent, 2 x 5 mile laps around the Blackford/Braid Hill area which must be one of the most scenic areas of
Edinburgh. The route is certainly a challenging one with some very interesting climbs around the course although there are some fast descends.
Everyone seemed to enjoy it although Caroline had a wee injury problem (nothing new there) and I ran with odd shoes, 1 old one and 1 new one ( don`t ask)."

Times and positions are as follows:
30 Iain Morrice,                    1 hr 8 mins             2nd MSV (missed 1st by 23 seconds)
44 Richard Gray                    1 h 13 m
50 Tom White                        1 h 15 m
76 Caroline Dunn                 1 h 19 m

Marathon Sat 5 March http://www.stranraer.org/marathon/results2005/2005Results.pdf
Misfortune quite literally got in the way when the runner in front of Andreas suddenly stopped to tie his shoelace, bringing Andreas down and causing quite a nasty knee injury. However, according to Andreas, “the
other person has now a print of my running shoe on his back! I am sure he won’t do that again.”

The Lasswade AC 10 mile held on Sunday 6th March.
(By our Roving Reporter – Iain)
"Another great race, especially by our HARMENY runners: Weather was brilliant, sunshine with a wee nip in the air. This 10 mile route is one of hardest 10 miles runs in the calendar. It is however through spectacular scenery around Roslin Glen, Auchendinny, Loanstone,
Rosslyn Lee Hospital, Rosewell and the final mile into Lasswade Rughy ground.
Big field this year of 382 runners, none of our runners were suffering any aches and pains from the previous weeks race the Hare and Hounds 10 miler.
Our runners were, Andy Neilson, Iain Morrice, Richard Gray, Tom White and Sally May.
Everybody did well with some excellent times considering the steep course (or as Sally puts it “I now know what people meant when they told me Lasswade was hilly”).

29 Andy Neilson                 1 hour 2 mins
73 Iain Morrice                     1 hour 6 mins
102 Richard Gray                   1 hour 9 mins
172 Tom White                     1 hour 15 mins
314 Sally May                       1 hour 26 mins

Our men’s team (1st  three scoring) were a very creditable 9th out of 18 teams entered. (I don’t recall us having a team score in previous years!)
Highlight of the day was a very old man (older than me) standing in the
Main Street in Rosewell shouting at me COME ON HARMENY. He recognised the Harmeny colours."

Grangemouth 10k, Sunday 13 March http://www.runningresults.freeserve.co.uk/houses/2005.html
Whilst some of us were preparing to visit Murrayfield for what turned out to be another inept Scottish men’s performance (the women won), a few sensible folk found a better way of spending Sunday and took in the delights of sunny Grangemouth. Alex’s time was 6 minutes faster than last year, Pauline was 4 mins faster and Beverley was 2 mins faster. Catherine broke 50 mins for the first time, and knows she can go a bit quicker.

210 Tom White (M45)                        42:50
313 Alex Gordon (F)                             46:11
411 Catherine Barr (F35)                      49:21

631 Pauline White (F)                          57:10
