Administration

Rigg Race, Monday 23rd May

Anyone not running in this is more than welcome to help out, or provide a partner to help out. I’m responsible for the finish line, but we also need as many marshals as possible to cover the various junctions in the village.

I’ve already got 5 volunteers (Verity, David Syme, Anne, Shelagh and Paul), but the more folk who get involved, the better for the runners, and the club.

There are medals for all finishers, so I’m also looking for 2 – 3 children to hand out medals.

As to the race itself, the “Balerno Resident” category is potentially wide open with last year’s first three having either flitted or not running.

Performance details

Dunbar 10k Sat 2 April

We were blessed with almost ideal condition at sunny Dunbar-sur-mer, and several folk were rewarded with pb’s for the 10k (even allowing for some alleged dodgy timekeeping). “Prize” for the biggest leap forward from last year must go to Janice, who tackled her first 10k exactly a year earlier at the same event, and has taken 4 minutes off her time. Her next target is Alex (another 25 secs required).

Strangest story I heard was from a former work colleague, a VERY experienced 10k / half-marathon runner who realised after about 6k that he had gone out too fast and was ever-so-slightly kxxxxxxxd. So for the first ever in a race he stopped, walked for 30 seconds, and restarted at a much more sensible pace. He finished 1 sec behind Iain in 58th place.

My annual slog was assisted by the girl who overtook me 4 times, whom I overtook 5 times… not that we were racing each other, but at the end there was a sprint finish to make sure.

39            Hamish Bell                           38.53 (pb)

57            Iain Morrice                          40.11 (pb)

London Marathon, Sunday 17 April.

Well done to Verity and Norma who successfully completed the London marathon. Their reports:

Norma “ …had a fantastic time.  So much healthier than the first time.  I managed to find an internet cafe and discover they had me a few seconds faster so I cracked 4.30!  That's me delighted.  Loved it.  And as everyone says the atmosphere was out of this world.  All the panics and fears all disappeared on the morning and I even saw Martin, complete with his camera.”

Verity “Just to say thank you once again for the club place in London Marathon.  As I am sure you are aware we were blessed with the best weather, and it was a great day with masses of spectators. Having checked the web site, I find that; I completed the course in 3 hours 47 minutes, and was 268th lady in my age group of 40 +, and 957th lady overall, which doesn't sound too bad. Unfortunately I don't have Paula's resolve to get into an ice bath, so am suffering with very sore muscles …..”

Edinburgh North Berwick (22 miles), Sat 7 May

Runners were blessed with a fresh tail-wind and blue skies.  We had five runners, all safely inside the cut-off time limit.

55             Iain Morrice          2.45.24

72             Andreas Wilhelm 2.52.41

84             Tom White             2.57.50

95             Caroline Dunn      3.05.05

122           Alex Gordon          3.17.46

Also worth recording that Dave Law of Corstorphine, who coaches the Harmeny juniors on Mondays & Wednesdays (and Corry juniors on other evenings) was 41st in a time of 2.39.59.

130 finishers.

Mad May-Day Mini-Marathon Brunch Run, Sunday 1 May, 18.7 k from Balerno to Ratho Adventure Centre.

Following last year’s successful run we decided, at rather short notice, to do it again before the hectic race season really got going in May.

This year we added a couple of new start points for those who didn’t want (a) the climb up Johnsburn Rd, (b) a yomp through some squelchy countryside and (c) the risk of getting lost somewhere in the moorland between Balerno and Carnwath. A total of 13 runners decided to brave all three and go the whole way. Only Lyndsey succumbed to the squelch, a full frontal mid-air swallow dive. They were joined by 4 who set-off at the 11k-to-go, and a further 3 at the 5k-to-go points. The planning worked a treat with runners from all three groups coming home together. I was exhausted – getting in and out of the car so often is so tiring. Not so welcome was the rain which was a tad heavier and more persistent than desirable, but I had a rain jacket in the car, and everyone else scrubbed up well (the hairdryers must have been doing overtime) before being joined by families for lunch.

We’ve got some ideas for a handicap race late summer / autumn, so we’ll be keeping an even closer eye on everyone’s performances over the summer – make sure we know how you get on.

Kristin’s picture

Those of you who know Kristin Lownie will have noticed her picture appeared on the entry form for the Capital City Challenge for a few years. But even though the Cap City Challenge is no more, Kristin’s picture has re-appeared – this time in a sports strategy document issued by the City of Edinburgh Council earlier this year.

Kristin’s re-action… “Not again ..!!”

Proposed weekend away at Badaguish – contact Iain Morrice

Date: early October.

”People can bring families / partners; they can walk, run or cycle. The runners’ partners may fancy some interesting mountain biking/kayaking or anything that takes their fancy. I will arrange routes etc.

Info about the accommodation is at http://www.badaguish.org/  (For those who did Glen Clova, Badaguish has rooms rather than dorms…)

My proposal would be that some people arrive Friday night/Saturday morning early, we would leave sometime on the Sunday.

On the Saturday morning people can do their own thing and meet back at approx 14:00pm.
Organise a run for
14:30 approx. This would be approx 13 miles with opportunities for people to do less. It depends on who and how many we get. I would plan the routes out however if we didn’t get a large response to this I can suggest loads of route choices.

Once completed we can have a drink etc back at the lodges.  In the early evening we could arrange for Chinese/Indian food to be delivered picked up from Aviemore.

I would arrange for a local entertainer "GILLIE", brilliant folk singer guitar player to entertain us for a few hours during which we could consume some drink.

I will organise and plan a route for us to run, walk or cycle depending on what you want to do. I would produce maps which would cater for all various distances. The main run would be a 13 miler amongst cracking scenery and almost all on tracks.

I have spoke with the Centre and the weekend 7-10 October is free at the moment although bookings do come in fast and furious. I have checked and there are no SAF races on that weekend which any of our people would do.

I have also confirmed that we can have the social / singer in the lodge/lodges. We would have to pay Gillie’s fees which I can find out later.

The costs are really dependent on how many fancy this outing. The wooden lodges cost approx £475 for a 3 night stay and each lodge can have approx 15 people in each. That would work out at roughly £30.00 per person.”

To make this happen we need to know who would like to go and we need to forward a deposit to get the booking. So if you would like to go contact Bob or Iain (449-6546) now!

Another Beginners Group?

If there’s enough demand I will start another beginners group in mid / late June, so pass the word out.
