Forthcoming events

The proposed week-end at Badaguish has been cancelled as there were insufficient responses to make this viable, and the slot is now unavailable.

Sun 28 Aug (tbc): Harmeny Pentland Runners Handicap 10k championship. We’ll work out target handicap times for everyone for 10k, and the winners will be those who are most ahead (or least behind) their handicap time – so it’s a race anyone can win – not just the fastest runners. There will be separate prize categories for “youngish” & “not-so-youngish”, M & F. More details later.

Sun 11 Sep  “Around Cumbrae 10 mile road race, Millport”. The club has agreed to subsidise a min-bus to take folk to this. The route runs around the island’s perimeter. Millport is the main town on the Island of Cumbrae which is reached by a Ferry from Largs, takes about 1hour 15 mins from Balerno.

The ferry takes about 10 minutes, the island is great with lots of nice cafes in Millport. The intention is to hire a mini bus from Arnold Clark which Iain will drive with Harmeny subsidising and the runners will pay for the fuel. The idea is to drive through in the morning do the race then have lunch on the island (old fashioned fish/ chips and pots of tea ). Contact Iain (449 6546) to register.

18 Sep    Week-end at Blair Atholl: With Badaguish canned, how about a running + country pursuits week-end at Blair Atholl? Contact Iain, 449 6546

8 Oct        Balerno Ladies Triathlon: Contact Alex Gordon (335 0379) for more info. Encourage anyone thinking of doing it to come along on Weds or Sundays.

Last Week in September:    Club AGM – Volunteers needed for committee (ie to organise a few more things)

TBA        Autumn:                                 Social event & prize-giving.

TBA        Winter:    Invited speaker(s) on endurance training and injury prevention & treatment

Well done to both girls for running their first 10k, in pretty respectable times, from a standing start as beginners, with maybe a hint of hidden talent, in January.

 * Runners who had done the Kinross half two days earlier.

This race will be remembered for several things… by the runners who got absolutely drenched going up the hill….. by the officials and result processors for the number of numberless runners who came in ….. by the runners who thought they were hallucinating when being overtaken by belly dancers …… by puzzled citizens of Balerno finding the remains of soggy numbers for days on end in the streets….. and for the club as we at last won the trophy for the “local resident team”….. a trophy we donated to the Gala Committee several years ago.

Quite a few (long-suffering) partners of regular runners took part, so I’ve taken the liberty of including their performances. (I’ve not included several youngsters who were members in their younger days.)

Richard Gray                          3hr 28
Tom White                             3hr 37
Verity Missen                        3hr 42
Caroline Dunn                       3hr 49
Janice Carruthers                  3hr 49
Alex Gordon                           4hr 01

Catherine Barr                        4hr 15
Pauline White                        5hr 00
Beverley Dodgson                5hr 00

Some highlights:

Norma: …What story is there to be had when I managed inside 4.15!!!!!!!  15 minutes off London.  Awaiting official time, obviously, as I can't believe it.  Does that mean I have to try for 4 hours next year? Oh I had a quick pee break - without standing in a queue!

Thanks to Peter and Lyndsey for the loud support at their leg!  And I look forward to seeing Alex’s piccies.   In the last 10 miles a gentleman - I saw him twice - shouted 'come on Harmeny', lovely…”

Pauline: “I can't believe it but on Saturday I decided to do the marathon. I got in about 4hrs 57mins I was at 20 miles at approx 3hrs 35mins but the last 6 miles was the killer it was an absolutely brilliant day, I am so glad I did it. Feeling a bit tender this morning but still on a high.”

Richard: “3hr 28! Was doing well up to 20 miles (2:32) then found the last 6 miles a bit tough and slowed down to 9 minute mile pace but I kept going for the whole race, which was pleasing. I think had I not gone to Iraq, I would have been able to get more long distances runs under my belt which would have prepared me better, No aches or pains at all today, must be all the hill training that Iain has put me through ! Got to say thanks to him for all the help that he gave me in preparing for the race.

One thing that surprised me was how quickly the race was over, the miles just kept ticking over and before I knew it I was back in Holyrood park and the race was finished, I must admit that I was so focused on my running that I never took in any of the sights but I do remember that there was fantastic support from the crowds which did keep you going….”

Janice; “It was a wonderful experience and believe it or not, I would do it again ( not for a while though!!).I did my usual of not sleeping the night before ( in fact worst ever, just dozed a couple of times) . I felt great until around 18ish and really enjoyed it, but someone put a great big wall in front of me at 20 / 21. Portobello is just a haze ! It wasn't so much the legs as my body giving up - cold, shivery, nauseus, but those gels are a great thing! Suddenly recovered at around 22 , lifted my head, kicked my heels and started passing people again. That lasted til last 400m, where I had used everything I had and plodded on til I crossed the line. What an amazing feeling to cross that finish line. Euphoric. I had set myself two aims, and I achieved both, so I'm absolutely delighted. 1. Not to stop running. 2. To try and come in sub 4. Time on my watch was 3.49. Hope it's accurate !!

Knees and toes sore yesterday, but can fully recommend Jennifer MacDonald for a sports massage. I had one last night and although sore at the time, it has worked wonders. Legs feel much better today .”

Dechmont Law 10k Trail Run, Sun 12th June http://www.lothianrunning.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/main.html

Following David Syme’s recommendation, three of us turned up for this run which is totally off-road – woodland tracks, some paths, two bridges and a sheep-trail.

 Conversation before the race
Sally:                      “I think we have to go up that hill.”
Passer-by:             “… aye, three times…”

After 9k I’d only counted two ascents, but the passer-by was right….

28 David Gibson                    40:44
75 Sally May                          49:09
76 Bob Douglas                     49:20
82 Ian May                             51:06 (Sally’s Dad)
106 finishers

As we all enjoyed this type of course, I’ve added a few trail runs I’m aware of to the fixtures at the end of this email.

Masters T&F, Aberdeen, Sat 21 May

In contrast to the long distance brigade, Bob Douglas completed the 100m in 13.52 secs (during a brief sunny interlude), and 200m in 28.38 sec (against the wind and rain). 41.90 seconds of racing time – a hard day’s running ….

 A plug for the youngsters

Our youngsters will be competing at Grangemouth on Saturday 6 August. If anyone would like to see what goes on a full blown track & field meeting, cheer them on or help out let me know (449-6105).
