28 Dec               New Year Sprint Meeting, Musselburgh (“A day at the races”)
by Bob Douglas "The weather was almost ideal - dry, sunny, no wind, a hard frost, but the ground of the horse racing course used for this meeting was pretty treacherous with chewy grass and the occasional hoof mark on the frozen ground. At least it was taking long spikes (15 mm).

After failing to make any real impression in my heat of the “Big” sprint, it was back to business as usual in the 90m handicap. I’d been pegged back 2 metres from last year, but won a competitive heat and was in the Vets final again. And as the official report says (http://www.sportingworld.co.uk/cgi-bin/newyearsprint/thisyearssprint.pl#90MV)

'Yet again the Veterans 90 metres final produced a very tight finish with David Grieve just breaking the tape ahead of Bob Douglas in 9.68 secs. ….”'

And so it was onto the final of the Open 90m where I came in 5th, but ahead of Davy Grieve who’d just edged me in the Vets. C’est la vie.

Four races in one day! Approx 41.5 seconds of actual racing time!! Totally shattered!!! Who says sprinters have it easy (apart from all you long-distance folk)."

1 Jan    Portobello Promethon
In as ideal conditions as you can get on New Years Day, ie dry, mild, windless, and not hungover, eight of us braved the annual trek along the promenade at Seafield. I may have done a pb for this race, but it was due to a desire catch Joe from Dunbar Running Club, a long-time stalwart of his club that I meet every year somewhere on the circuit. Our annual exchange goes along the lines of:

Joe “You’re too old for this”;
Me “If I’m too old, you’re too old!”
Joe is nearly 69, and I beat him by 4 seconds.

107 Richard Gray                      26.13
118 Tom White (V)                    26.37

183 Bob Douglas (SV)                29.41
215 Alex Sommerville (SV)         31.15
252 Lynsey Boyle (FV)               34.11
255 Catherine.Porter (F)             34.20
257 Jackie Allen (FV)                 34.35
268 Pauline White (FV)             35.46
284 runners

PS        Overheard in a pre-event conversation between the organisers on 27 Dec…

“This race is getting more popular. We might need to think about toilets for the runners. The Cat & Dog Home owners are not very happy about…………”

1 Jan     New Year Triathlon
“If God invented marathons to keep people form doing anything more stupid, then Triathlon must have taken Him completely by surprise” from www.edinburghtri.org/

There are more of the girls doing this, and they’re getting rather good at it!

It is good to see that Catherine finished ahead of John Gordon (Alex’s husband). It must have been nearly as satisfying as finishing ahead of Alex would have been.

14 Jan Great Winter Run, 5k, Holyrood Park
This was the second big target for the jogScotland girls. (The first target was 15 minutes, which 10 of the girls had managed a few weeks earlier). Once we confirmed what the actual route was, the girls were under strict instructions to walk up the hill … there would no Running Police to whip along any stragglers…

For call-of-nature reasons, we had a cheer to ourselves when we crossed the Start line behind the main field, but soon made up ground and knew we were really on our way when we overtake Rupert the Bear.

We had absolutely ideal conditions, no rain, no wind, no snow (it’s not always like this!) There were also some of the regular runners taking part and all known times are given below. I’ll save everyone’s embarrassment by not including which age group they were in (it’s on the web-site anyway), but it’s worth noting that Helen was 2nd in her age group and Margot 3rd in hers.

Results are at: http://www.greatrun.org/Results/gwr2006/gwr_sen.htm

314 Paul Thompson       25:50
647 Beverley Dodgso     30:05
665 Helen Robinson       30:21
1019 Louise Tindall        36:55
1050 Lindsey Middleton  38:00
1051 April Birrell            38:00
1052 Margot Ward         38:01
1090 Heather Love         39:54
1091 Aileen Macleod      39:54
1092 Anne Macnab        39:54
1111 Bob Douglas          42:09
1112 Elizabeth Martin     42:09
1141 finishers

Continuing the Beginners group. We’re going to keep the Sunday group going as an Advanced Beginners / Intermediate group. We’ve been joined by a few more folk, so if anyone is ready to start / re-start from the level of “easy 5k” and wants to get going again, now is the time to join us. The next target for the girls will be a 10k in May (Britannic Women’s or Edinburgh). Training will also include how to time going to the loo before a race…..we’ll work our way up from 1 minute.

 Running Group Structure

With more & more runners at all levels it would be great if we could put a bit more of a group structure to support folk at the different levels. Using a ski-ing analogy we’ve probably got:

Black Group:     Fast, furious & will tackle anything. Always looking for new bogs and hills
Red Group:       Good runners, under 50 min for 10k. Will do sensible black or hard blue runs
Blue Group:      Slower and steady, most can glide along a half or full marathon.
Green group:   “5k is fine for me” … with an annual social 10k run
Beginners:        “Is that five minutes yet?”

So if anyone would like to take, or take turns at taking a group, hit the email button. Right on cue I’ve received the latest jog-leader course info from Scottish Athletics:

Iain’s Marathon Training Programme
A few folk have been asking Iain about his training programme for the Dublin Marathon. It's here.

Runners World are sending out regular emails with their marathon training schedule. To sign up for it go to: http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=2111

Handicap Runs
Last August we did our first club pursuit handicap, slightly more than 10k, off-road down the Water of Leith walkway & Canal path. We aim to repeat this in August. If anyone has a view on this route or thoughts on alternatives, hit the eMail Button.

Other target-time (handicap) events: If there is support for this we’ll designate some of the most popular local races (eg Dunbar 10k, Rigg Race) as club handicap events and have one or more handicap prize winners based on how well everyone has performed relative to their handicap / target time.

Handicap target times will be adjusted after each race to make each event as open as possible, (..however the handicapper will be aware if anyone tries to fool him.)

 Weekend Trips
Iain Morrice has suggested a couple of weekend running trips:
Freuchie Family Frolics:
Iain’s got a Hotel contact that could accommodate family groups, and he can set up various routes to run.                                            Proposed 13/14 May

Wee-G–free wee-kend: Get away from the crowds at the Glasgow Half and instead head up to Elgin where there’s a Marathon, a Half and a 10k at the same time.          2/3 September

Contact Iain NOW on 449-6546 if you’re interested or would like more info. Iain will also be handing out flyers over the next few weeks to drum up interest.
