Loch Ness Marathon, 7 Oct

By Kenny “A great marathon, would recommend it,  I will do it again next year.  They bus you out to the start (about 25 coaches winding along B roads) and you hang about in the middle of nowhere for an hour (probably the best fertilised patch of ground in Scotland).

You basically run along the side of Loch Ness to Inverness, so as you can imagine it is very picturesque.  So much so, the Spanish man in front of me (wearing Kilt, Scottish flag and painted up like Mel Gibson), kept stopping to take photos and the overtaking me again.  He ran away from me at about 20 miles and I never saw him again...I was grateful.

The course is tough (the flat bits are hilly and the hilly bits are murder) even the downhill is nasty as it comes late on.  Having said that, my time was a little disappointing but if you have not put in the miles, you get what you deserve in the last 10K of a marathon (glad Tom White was not running as he would have beaten me.  There is also no truth in the rumour that I am avoiding him now with my absence from Aviemore!)  My usual test for runs these days is that I have run well if there are no FSVs that beat me, the classification was a little odd here but there was no F55 beat me (a victory) but 6 x F45 beat me (a humbling, probably required).

I would also not recommend three hours on the A9 after a marathon, or any time for that matter...”

 Aviemore half marathon, 14 Oct

By Ian May and Paul Thompson (the Jack Lemmon and Walter Mattau of race reporting?)

“This was another of the clubs handicap events, with the added pressure of defending the men’s team award won in the inaugural race lat year. The race is through attractive countryside and attracted a larger turn out than last year after the organisers boosted numbers to 1200.  We had opted to travel up on the morning of the race – being more than aware of the importance of avoiding the attractions of the nightlife of Aviemore prior to Sunday’s race (no-one can party like Ian, so I decided to remove the temptation from his plate – damn that was stupid, might have been better to let him go so I could have passed him in the race)!

Another note from Paul – he missed out the early morning rise, driving in the pitch black up the A9 and finding a suitable tree when things got desperate. Speaking of which did I mention Norma….?

In order to avoid missing registration we had arranged for the men’s captain (is that what we call Tom???) to pick up our numbers and chips the evening before the race.  On Sunday morning we were almost panicking (speak for yourself sirrah, I was still asleep!) as he failed to appear at the agreed time – but ¾ hour later we received numbers and timing chips (just thought of a name OLD Faithful!).

The start is 13.1 miles away from the finish – seems logical – so we were bussed up to the start.  Unfortunately this caused some problems as it required 3 trips by the buses which meant that the race was about ½ hour late starting – Paul, again, I don’t remember getting 3 buses (might still have been asleep at that point).  Those on the first buses had to wait about 1/1/2 hours at the start for the rest to “catch” up, and those on the last had no opportunity to warm up – but plenty of time to find a loo!

The race itself was a mixture of trails and roads in about equal amounts through glorious country side  In general – or certainly in the position I was in it was well-marshalled and the feeding stations were well placed.  The finish had a bit of a sting in its tail with a short sharp incline followed by a short cross-country section – good practice for the following weekend.

Paul – should have tried it further back - narrow routes and lots of people! Can certainly say I’m well practiced, problem is I’m not sure at what…..”

Handicap Results.

This was the first time we’ve done a half-marathon handicap medal. Handicap targets were base on applying a standard factor of 2.25 to 10k target times. This will suit some better than other … lean mean running machines powered by Duracell will tend to do better than converted sprinters, (but it should work the other way when dropping down to 5k).

 Broxburn cross-country, Sat 20th Oct

By Jack Lemmon & Walter Mattau (the Ian May and Paul Thompson of reporting)

“The League cross-country races are something one either loves or hates!  One of the good things about them is that it gives members the opportunity to run as a team (Ian forgot to mention piping a “team” mate at the post).  The second is that it is free – not free of pain, I’m still traumatised by Galashiels.

The course was relatively dry but was very demanding – which I suppose one should have guessed as one of the hills was called lung-buster hill (Paul - did this one in Feb, when it had been raining, in road shoes and spent some quality time on my hands and knees).   The men did three laps and I sure that most competitors enjoyed the three ascents of this feature.  The pace is allegedly fast and furious (?? Seemed pretty damn fast to me!!!) at the front of the field.  Towards the rear it is rather more sedate (it’s where we with the zimmer frames tend to congregate) – but no less effort is required!

If you haven’t had a go at it yet come along and try it – there are still a number of opportunities this winter! (plenty of time, to freeze, wade through rivers of questionable consistency and be lapped by bearded, old gentlemen)”
