New membership year:

Another year ends, and another year begins… The main points to note:

Annual Membership fees for 2009/10: £22

Membership Form: An updated membership form (Word Document) for the new membership year 09/10 can now be downloaded from the club website

Club membership provides you with the services of our dedicated jogleaders organising groups, and routes whatever the weather, for all ability levels. We organise easy social runs, hard runs, trackwork, handicap runs, monthly handicap medals and free entry into the three cross-country league races for a fraction of the cost of gym membership, evening classes or personal trainers.

And don’t forget club members get 10% discount in Edinburgh specialist running shops (Run n Become, Run-4-It, Footworks).

Family Discounts: Adult members with two or more children joining should be aware of the family discount. We charge full membership for the first 2 members of a family (eg mum + child 1) and only £7 for additional children.

We are also continuing the deal with Pentland Triathletes where the same basic membership fee (plus respective capitation fees) can cover both clubs for those who wish to join both.

 Runners council meeting 25 Sep

Minutes are on the website but a few items discussed were-

Socials
Bowling night will be organised  in the next 2 months.

A club ceilidh is planned for Sat 16th January 2010  with quiz, live band, food and disco it was a great success last year so hope to see everyone there.

SOCIAL RUN – Iain Morrice
Our next social run will be to the Alan Ramsey Hotel in the Carlops ( good food and excellent beers) and it will be run on Sunday the 8th of November. That date does not clash with any other races. I am still finalising everything as I want to speak with the gamekeeper and with the owner of the Hotel. But the date and venue will remain as above. There will be opportunities for 2 types of runs and distance. Everyone will start together and run part of the same route .The first will be straight enough to the Carlops and will be approx 8 miles, the other will involve East Cairn hill and will go over the Thieves Road towards West Linton approx 12/13  miles, the finish will also be the Alan Ramsey Hotel.
More detail will be available nearer the time but at least now people can put this date down on their calendars.
 and
BOGandBURNS
These will be starting up from the end of November through to the end of March. I have still to decide where and when these will take place. It seems that the last lot that I did was well received and people seemed to want some more. So watch this space.

Wednesday evening sessions

The jog leaders are hoping to try and organise some different sessions for Wednesday nights such as fartlek, interval, hill reps, torch runs and so on, so it would be good to know what you all think about this – we may try a few and see how they go.

On Wed 21 Oct Bob will take a structured speedwork / fartlek / incline session (NOT sprinting) for those who’d like a taste of the sort of thing we do on Thursdays. As we charge kids for coached sessions, there will be a small charge of £2 for this one. This type of session is not for the faint-hearted (literally) and is mainly intended for more advanced / intermediate runners who are capable of a 10k in under 60 mins.

And anyone who wants regular speed training should get along to Saughton on Thursdays – ask Lorna, Kirsty, Christina, Mo, Ian , Darren or Kieran what it’s really like.

 London Marathon

The club gets a small allocation of places in the London marathon. Last year it was three (up on previous years), In previous years priority has gone to those who had entered the public ballot for places but not been successful, and any places left over were drawn in our own mini-ballot amongst those who registered a desire. So:

If you were unsuccessful in the public ballot, please get in touch

If you didn’t enter the public ballot, but would like to be considered for a place, likewise please get in touch

Cross Country

During the Autumn and Winter there is the opportunity to participate in cross-country races. These are usually held on a mixture of parkland, playing fields or country trails. But be warned – you might get a bit wet / muddy / cold.

East District Cross League: The main X-C fixtures are the three East District Cross League meetings. The race format is the same at each of these:

 TIME RACE                              Approximate Distance
1:00     Under 11 Boys & Girls                       1,600 metres (1 mile)
1:15     Under 13 Boys & Girls                       3,000 metres (<2 miles)
1:35     Women & U17 men                            6,000 meters (<4 miles)
2.10     Under 15 Boys & Girls + U17 Women          4,500 metres (<3 miles)
2.30    Men                                                      10km (6 miles)

 The dates and venues are:
Saturday 17 Oct                    Stirling University
Sunday 22 Nov                       Dunfermline (Queen Anne High School)
Saturday 16 Jan                    Broxburn Academy

There is no charge for entering these races as the league fees are paid by the club.

As it’s an inter-club competition, only open to club members, we all wear vest number “20”

The East League Website (for venue information): http://www.eastleague.co.uk/

Speak to Tom, Paul Thomson or Kirsty if you’re thinking about going along –

And Paul’s plea for the first meeting:

we need a team of 6 for the "senior men" in order to qualify so I'm looking for like minded souls to go out and enjoy a Saturday afternoon in the ever so pleasant grounds of Stirling University. Over the past 3 years the women have consistently beaten the men so I'm throwing down the guantlet to see if you can rise to the challenge and give them a run for their money this time round. Anyone that's interested, get back to me by e-mail (paul_jthompson@hotmail.com) by Wed 14th Oct.

Next Coffee & Cake

We’ll probably do another one sometime November / early Dec. I’ve been assured there’s a good run at the Klondyke Garden Centre, Mortonhall. So it could be Coffee, Cake and Christmas shopping run. More details next month.

New Year Sprint meeting – 28 Dec

The annual New Year Sprint meeting (which older members may know from its days as the Powderhall sprint) also has a 1600m Open handicap race on the programme.   As it’s a handicap event you would need to provide performance details of the most similar events over the last 2 years, and then you will be provided with an ungenerous handicap for your first outing (which will be adjusted in future years..). It’s held on the racecourse at Musselburgh - chewy grass, but dead flat.  For anyone who’s never experienced a “professional” event on the Scottish Games / Highland Games circuit, this is a good opportunity for a different experience. One other incentive, 1st prize is £275.

Entry forms with Bob, entries for all events close 1 Nov.

Supporting the club’s juniors

The club was founded over thirty years ago primarily for local children, and that is still very much at the heart of what we do. The club has over 150 members, inc over 100 adult running members, but only 2 active Level 2 UK Athletics qualified coaches from within Harmeny, Over time the number of coaches from the local community has diminished to the point where we rely heavily on older students and Dave Law from Corstorphine. So a plea, maybe my last one, for those who would like to help support the next generation of juniors – even if it’s only once a month - get in touch with Bob.

Montane Highland Fling – 24 April 2010

http://www.highlandflingrace.org/

We’ve entered 2 ladies teams into the relay run for this race along the first part of the west Highland way next year – Keiran Morgan was keen to enter a men’s team so if you’re interested  please email him at morgank@lineone.net as soon as possible as there are a limited number of teams allowed. Or  speak to each other on Wed/Sun and organise a team if there are still places.

Reports from recent races

First, well done to Bob Turner – 1st at East Neuk 10k and 2nd at Loch Ness 10K!

Isle of Cumbrae Road race 13th September 2009 – Iain Morrice
The Isle of Cumbrae road race covers a distance of approx 10.5 miles and starts and finishes in the Capital of the island, Millport.
Harmeny had 4 runners entered for the race, Iain Morrice, Ian May, Mo May and Kirsty Stoddart.
The route takes you around the island coastal road. It was a great day with blue sky, hardly any cloud and just a small westerly breeze. The views from the island are fabulous, Arran, Argyll coastline and South to Ailsa Craig. The route on the east side is flat and the west side is more undulating. This was a special day for Mo as it was the longest race she had entered.
Mo May completing it in a great time of 89mins, she was the 3rd place lady in the female 55 category. Ian May did it in 83mins and picked up wee sore muscle. I completed it in 71 minutes and Kirsty Stoddart completed it in 84mins.
Well done to all.
Kieran Morgan who runs with us as his second club ran in the colours of his home club Carnegie and did it in 76 minutes.

Stirling 10k  20 September 2009 – Chris Morgan

A fast, flat course at Stirling brought out a fair few Pentland Runners to run the 10k on 20th September.  As well as being a fast course, it’s also a pretty scenic one with great views of the Wallace Monument, a peek of Stirling Castle and a crossing over the River Forth.  And it wasn’t too crowded like some of the bigger runs, and was chip timed.  There was a slight incline at about 8.5km but, as Kirsty proved, with our frequent runs in the hills we (well some of us) were able to storm up it to finish strong at the end of the race.  I’m referring here mainly to Kirsty who sat a little way behind me for the whole race until this hill, at which point, as I began to flag, she remained strong and sped up to the finish.  (Not that I’m competitive or anything!  Must do more Saturday hill runs….)

All the Harmeny entrants performed very well and PBs were abundant, unless your name was Morgan, i.e. PBs for Kirsty, Lorna, Jonathan and Gavin.  I’m not sure how Wendy, Gordon or the McBrides faired with regard to PBs.  But congratulations to everyone – some impressive results.

So, overall a great race, topped off by a lovely post-race cup of tea at sponsor Morrison’s supermarket after the event.

Two Breweries Hill race, 26th September 09. – Iain Morrice

This race is organised by the Scottish Hill runners and is the one of the Scottish ultimate long distance hill runs. The distance of 18 miles is not the hard bit, its the 5000ft up and down that you have to complete from start to finish.
This is one of the hardest races I have competed in, should not say compete but took part in. Myself and Caroline Dunn were the only Harmeny members who took part this year. The route starts at the brewery within the grounds of the historic Traquair House near Innerleithen and finishes at the Broughton brewery in the village of the same name. It was a great day with lovely blue sky, no clouds and just a wee breeze to keep the sweat away. The terrain is of the mixed variety, thick heather, hick grassland, steep slpoes, some with lots of stones and a few bogs just to keep you on your toes. The views are out of this world and the race is worth it for these views alone. You tend not to think of high hills in the Borders but I can now tell you, there are loads and the views from the tops is breathtaking. There were times when going up, that you could count the number of ants on the ground because you nose was so close to the ground.
Don`t let this explanation put you off doing this event. If you want to experience serious stamina provoking running then this is the one for YOU!!!!.
This year there were 110 runners of which there were 4 DNF`s. our results are as follows.
Iain Morrice 4 hours 33mins position 91st of 106 finishers
Caroline Dunn 4 hours 34mins position 92nd of 106 finishers.

I will be doing it again next year so if there is anyone up for a challenge then they can join me for my hill training sessions.
Will Caroline do it again, well that is for her to answer and I think I might know what her answer might be, watch this space.
