Update
Hi all
Reminder that
membership fees are now due
Annual Membership fees for 2009/10 22pounds
Membership Form: An updated membership form (Word Document) for the new membership year 09/10
can now be downloaded from the club website
Other annual reminder:
Scottish Athletics operate a separate
registration Scheme. Participants in
Scottish Athletics Permit events (eg road races etc) pay a £2 levy if they
have not taken out "Athletics Scotland" registration. When a road race entry form ask a question about
"AS affiliation number" or "Registration number" etc this is what they
are referring to (Harmeny does not issue membership numbers). Membership of Athletics
Scotland is required far anyone competing in regional or national championships. Members
who do wish to register should do so directly with Scottish Athletics.
For any
new members, theres lots of information on the club website and we also have a
Facebook group, http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=46768682967
Its
a closed group purely for club members to discuss races, share lifts to races etc etc. Contact us to become a member of the group.
Weve
received an allocation of three places again this year, and have so far received 4
requests from those who entered the ballot. Gavin
Orr is almost certain he will get a place as a guide for a blind runner so provisionally
the 3 places are going to Nicky Freedman, Janis Brown and Elaine Scott. Good luck to all.
Wednesday evening sessions during
Winter
The jogleaders have come up with some
suggestions for our sessions on Wednesday evenings during the winter to try and make them
more varied and to help relieve the routine of running pavements does anyone enjoy
this?? So we thought a rota might work, with
4 or 5 different types of run. So weve
made up a rota but for some of these weeks we need some volunteers to lead smaller
groups eg the fartlek and hill rep
weeks. But two things to remember if
for example you dont want to do hill
reps then we will also have a normal run, and each session will be suitable for all groups, so dont panic! Please let us know what you all think is
this a good idea? Were keen to give it
a go so hope youll all join in. And
please help by volunteering to lead a small group, even for just a couple of weeks, Tom
& Paul need some help with the faster runners !
Well put the list on facebook as
well so you know what to expect each week.

Notes
Torch run will mix between on
and off road, probably about 6 miles, but for the beginners we can do a shorter run.
Fartlek depending on which
group will dictate pace. Basic set up is first 10mins is at a reasonable pace
to warm up, the next 25 mins (or thereabouts) will be covering the Fartlek, routine with
the remainder of the run as a cool down at a reasonable pace. The Fartlek session
recommendations: fast group 5 mins hard, 2 mins easy times 3 or 4; intermediate 2 mins
hard, 2 mins easy times 5 or 6; jogscotland up to jogleader and experience of group but 1min hard and 2 mins rest is a suggestion.
Hill reps warm up by
jogging/running down to the Kirkgate. Idea is to run approx 300m up the hill as hard as
possible and jog back down and repeat. The caveat is trying to ensure you run at the same
pace each time you go up the hill. Depending on ability set the number of reps as: 10 fast
group; 6 intermediates and 4 jogscotland. The warm down will be by jogging/running back to
BHS. Again the return route can vary depending on ability.
Out and back is a test to see
if you can run a negative split. The idea is to run out for 25 mins and then turn around
and run back the same way, but see if you can do the return trip faster. Another incentive
is that those who were at the back become the leaders when they turn around, can you keep
there...?
Interval session (paced speed) with
Bob D this will have a flavour of what
we do every Thursday night at the track with Bob, but only on those Weds when the Harmeny
kids dont have athletics
Next Coffee & Cake run
Is on 6 Dec. meeting at the Klondyke
Garden Centre, Mortonhall and is about 5-6 miles of easy-ish running. These are gentle
paced runs for everyone. Meet at 10.30 at Klondyke GC car park. And bring plenty of change for the goodies
and
Christmas shopping.
Reports
from recent races Paul Thompson
As always cross country starts off with good
intentions, two teams of 4 (A= Boab, Paul H, Jonathon C and Al; B= Gavin, Kenny, Iain and
PaulT) ended up as three and a half - I'll explain that one later. The extremes that
people go to to avoid running around a field says all! Paul H had obviously been trawling
the less salubrious establishments in
So somewhat reduced in number we still managed to squeeze a team together. Now I
suppose I ought to explain that I also came well prepared with an excuse and recovering
from cracked ribs and a dodgy Achilles wasn't really it. Lager, Guinness and vodka! Not
saying anymore other than my pre race strategy was perhaps imperfect - oh Boab did mumble
something about drinking a bottle and a half of red wine, but my fish was definitely
bigger than his....!
Anyway, the race. This was a one lap affair around playing fields and a ploughed field
down the 'Pans. Boab was first out with Gavin, then me and Al as anchor. Needless to say
the wine proved no issue as Boab stormed round in 13:30 placing us in 8th; Gavin also
cruised round in 15:36 putting us 25th; unfortunately the drink didn't really help me as I
lost a place coming in 26th with 16:12; Al did his best to pull us back with another fast
time of 15:32 which left us in 27th overall. Not bad for a bunch of "old
timers" out of a very competitive field of 54.
Suitably shattered after our Herculean efforts we retired for carbo replacement at the
Gothenburg for a pint and a panini to plan how to get out running cross country next time
round -
I've always remembered cross-country
as spending "quality time" hanging round wind riven, rain soaked muddy
fields wondering if I'd be missed if I sneaked off to the warmth of my car
without the evil Tom noticing and nagging me to come back and wade through knee deep mud
for the greater good of the club - that and trying to beat the girls by at least having a
full squad pass the finish line. This was certainly the case 2 years ago at
Well this time round things were
different. I was the tyrant bending everyone's ear as Tom was away in North Uist (probably
fishing Pauline and not actually decorating at all) and the weather was stunning. It
was as glorious as ever I remember it in October. I very nearly smiled. At cross country
(I've always wondered why the word country is prefixed with cross)!!
Anyway, back to the event. The
ladies managed to field a team of 4 and had a 2 lap 6k circuit to run - I'll let them spin
whatever yarn the wish about their easy run. As for the guys we managed to get a
team of 7 (see how it's done Tom?), and with Kenny turning up it probably reduced the
average age to under 40 but not by much. We had 3 laps and 9k to do (equality pah!).
Well I started near the back and watched the others shoot off. After spotting Iain
further up front I decided to see if could catch him and use him as a pace maker. It took
me half of the first lap to reach his shoulder! Having gasped my way that far at that pace
I did the bloke thing and instead of keeping Iain company, ran past him. Feeling pleased
with myself and seeing Al not to far in front, I thought I'd give him a go as well.
To say I ran the first lap way
too fast would be an understatement. At the start of the second, I began to think about
waving the "ow my leg hurts" flag and drop out, but never having played that
particular joker card (yet) I decided to curse Tom instead and gave up on Al. I did manage
to hang on for the 3 laps, and feeling secure in the last 200m eased off (it was going
uphill!) only to find Iain sprinting past me. You know, it's surprising how much energy
you can find in certain situations. Lets just say though the times were equal, I was first
over the line.
Thanks to everyone that turned out and
well done to both the adults and the children.

Match 2 in East District Cross-country League is
Sunday 22 Nov at Queen Anne School,
Jedburgh Half
This was my first attempt at anything
like this distance since July when Hugh made me fall off a mountain bike at Glentress and
crack my ribs - just joking Hugh, I'll be back there with you and Ian again sometime soon
I hope! To add to my addled mental state, the physical conditions were not really the best
I've ever seen. Kinda reminded me of cross country but without the mud.
However, what was great to see was the large contingent from the club turning up for both the 10K and the half, the bright red shirts adding a cheery flash to a grey day.
I was more than surprised to finish in 1:34, off my pace for a half when fit but much better than I thought it would be considering my preparation (or lack thereof) and the weather.
