| Update Aug / (Sep) 2008
Heres
the September newsletter with latest results, reports, and other bits of information.
The
minutes of the last Runners council meeting are on the club website, Frank Tooley is
taking over as chair of the runners council and Helen Robinson will do the minutes. Date of next runners council meeting will be
October sometime, date to be confirmed.
Club
AGM
The
Harmeny AGM will be held in Currie Rugby Club on Tuesday 30th September at 7.30
in Currie Rugby Club (subject to confirmation from CRFC).
This
is your chance to find out a bit more about the full range of activities of the club and
to quiz the committee on the clubs management and structure.
As
ever there are one or two committee positions to be filled, so as ever we will be looking
for a couple of volunteers willing to take on a couple of roles. Further information from Bob (449-6105).
Coaching
/ jogleading
Ever
thought about becoming a jogleader or a coach? Over the last year the number of groups our
jogleaders are taking has increased, but the number of jogleaders hasnt. The next
local jogleader courses will be held on Sun 21 Sep at West Lothian and Sun 2 Nov at Stirling.
Info on courses will be updated at www.jogscotland.org.uk. Its a fairly easy
course, and you dont have to be a fast runner to be a good jogleader in fact
the opposite is usually the case.
Since
the club was founded over 30 years ago the primary activity has been developing junior
athletes, many of whom have gone on to win championships and
some have represented Scotland. Its good to see so many of the runners
with children attending Harmeny training sessions. With such a large adult membership it
would be great to see some of the experienced runners supporting the junior side. We meet
on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.00 7.00 at Balerno High School, so you could come
along an hour before your normal Mon or Wed evening run to help out. Please contact Bob if you would like to be added to
the helpers rota or get involved in regular coaching.

THE
HANDICAPPERS MUSINGS
Not
a lot to report this month, although I was particularly pleased when running the club
handicap race to see, as I reached the canal towpath, a mass of runners completing the
course fairly close together!
There
will be a few changes to handicaps following the club race and a few new names will be on
the list, which will be on the clubs web site fairly soon after you receive the
newsletter.
Two
handicap events left for this year although it has been suggested that we might also
include one of the cross-country races later
in the autumn.

David
Syme reports: "At the end of our run today in the Thriepmuir car park I talked with
Jimmy Laing of the Lothian Cycle Club (01314679310). They are organising for the
30th time a running race from West Linton to Cauldstane Slap and back - 10km on the first
Sunday in December. Each runner will receive a commemorative crystal whatsit.
Organiser is J Clunie Tel: 0131 229 9036
This might be a Bog and Burn option.....?"

FORTH BRIDGE 10K Ian May
It surprises me that more club members dont enter the Forth Bridge 10k. Whilst it can not be described as a flat fast
course, running above the Forth has a certain appeal even if this year it was rather
windy. The course starts in North Queensferry
and after a short climb there is a long run down towards Inverkeithing before the steady
climb up to the Bridge and the run across and back to the finish at the Northwest end of
the Bridge. Then the hardest bit comes after the finish, the climb up countless steps to
return to the community centre where one is rewarded, as in previous years, by an
excellent spread.
I
was particularly impressed with Bev who cycled there, ran the race, climbed the steps and
then cycled home.
This
is an excellent local race, very friendly and well organised well worth trying if
you havent already done so but you will need to enter early as there is a limit on
the number of entrants.
Allan
Price on the Arran half marathon:
I
did the Arran half again on June 29; 64th out of 87 in 1 51:56, 5 minutes quicker than
last year. Lovely run, especially along the shore at Machrie (although slightly tarnished
by the thought of the hill to come) and along the top of Machrie moor. Three hills,
according to my Garmin of 200 feet from mile 3-4 and mile 5-7 and 100 feet from mile 8-9,
although the second hill feels much steeper than the first and I'd forgotten all about the
third hill until I started climbing it. Quiet roads to run along (a bit too quiet given
the paucity of runners: I was over a minute behind the 63rd runner and even further ahead
of the 65th; last year was better when I chatted to somebody from miles 2 to 10: probably
explains the difference in time). We had a gentle shower on the first hill, but otherwise
enough sun for me to burn. Well organised and very friendly, buses to pick the
runners up from the 945 ferry, coffee and biscuits (and use of the pool and bar)
at the Blackwaterfoot Hotel and buses back for the 440
ferry. Recommended and it could do with more entrants.
Jill
Cox says:
I
completed my first race of the season on Sunday 13th July- the New Forest 10
mile in Hampshire. Glorious sunny day, amazing scenery, wild ponies running amok ...
and an older brother who beat me by 7 minutes!
893 runners - me, 820th (1:45:10) ... not heather on fire, but glad to be
back!
Anne says we enjoy hearing a wee story
about runs you have all done so please send me a few words about races you have done and
if you enjoyed them and can recommend them to others (or not as the case may be!).
Social events
Sunday 14 Sep: Coffee & Cake run to South
Gyle
For the intermediate, "jog while we chat" group, a repeat of the easy run we did
in January to the Gyle Centre for the aformentioned goodies (9.5k mainly downhill).
Departing from BHS at usual time (10.00). Bring plenty of change so we can get served
quickly! Follow this link for the Route map.
We'll
need to organise cars to be at the Gyle to bring us back afterwards. Bob or Anne will be
there at 9.30 to bring back some drivers who can leave cars, meeting at the M&S side
of the central entrance.
